Friday, October 16th we drove to Memphis (3.5 hours away) for 2 appointments. The first appointment was to do a "milk scan" which they put radio active medicine in Aryssa's formula and put her under an x-ray machine to gage how many times she refluxes. This test was originally ordered by the developmental pediatrician we saw back in September. They needed to know how bad her reflux was so they know what type of surgery to do on her for her mic-key button. If reflux was bad then they would perform a Nissen along with the G-tube surgery. Nissan is where they create a flap out of tissue at the opening of the stomach to the esophagus so she would be unable to reflux or throw up anymore. All of my therapist's were very concerned because in their experience the Nissen has caused MORE aversion due to not being able to throw up when their belly gets upset. I can totally understand that for sometimes it just feels better to get it up and out of the belly. Well the milk scan didn't go very well. She screamed for the entire hour while throwing up for over half of the hour. I was not a happy camper. I was balling my eyes out and poor Rob was trying to calm me down and help calm Aryssa down.
After we were done with that procedure we went across the street to meet with the GI doctor. I expressed my concerns of the test not looking good because she did not like being strapped down the the table unable to move and she was laying flat which DUH! is going to act up her reflux. He told us that he also would NOT recommend the Nissen in a baby that would most likely outgrow her reflux (9 out of 10 babies do). He feels that since she is gaining weight even with her throwing up occasionally that he did not want to do the Nissen. His view on it is why do something permanent to someone that is most likely outgrow their problem. I totally agree. That was a HUGE weight lifted off my shoulders. So he then made us an appointment the following Monday (3 days later) to meet with the surgeon Dr. Eubanks
Monday, October 19 we then again drove to Memphis to meet the surgeon. Dr. Eubanks was a very nice doctor. He wore cowboy boots which was kinda amusing, but he was awesome with Aryssa. He said he wanted to get her surgery done as soon as possible to get the NG tube out for he agrees with all the doctors that it has been in too long and that she will do much better with a Mic-Key button. He left to go look at his schedule and came back 5 minutes later and said "How about October 29th?" Rob and I looked at each other and giggled. Dr. Eubanks was confused and asked what was so funny and we told him that Oct. 29th was our 6th wedding anniversary. Needless to say we said that it would be fine that we wanted to get it done asap.
Tuesday October 20 : I took Aryssa to her 9 month well baby doctor's appt. She weighs 16 lbs and is 26.5 inches long. That puts her in the 6% for her weight (she hangs around 10%) and 15% for her height. Her head size is still at 0%. They pricked her foot to check her iron levels which is low but not too low. Her number was 11 and they like to see between 12-14. Needless to say we have to continue to give her her Poly-Vi-Sol with iron that make her tummy upset.
Tuesday October 27th. Its 2 days before her surgery. She has not been feeling well since Friday which she has had a "cold". Well turns out she has ANOTHER ear infection. This is her third ear infection in the past 3 months. Well I was worried that this would post pone her surgery but I called and they said that as long as she isn't running a fever the day of surgery that she is fine.
Wednesday, October 28th: We are in Southhaven at my Aunt Jennifer's house which is 15 minutes outside Memphis. We have to take Aryssa to the hospital at 6 am tomorrow. She gets her last NG tube feeding at 12:30 tonight EVER! I will post an update after her surgery. We will be in the hospital for 2-3 days after surgery.
Just to let everyone know she is having her surgery at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis. Please wish us luck and have us in your prayers.
