She was in a great mood this morning. She did awesome. She wouldn't take the barium from the bottle but the squirted it in her mouth and it forced a swallow. Her anatomy is all correct. Her swallow study showed she protects her air way very well from aspiration which is GREAT news. The upper GI did show reflux. I am not sure what that information will do for us yet, since we already knew she had reflux. According to the Speech Pathologist that conducted the swallow study, there is no reason why she can't swallow. She feels with continued therapy that Aryssa should be able to eat again by mouth. She also feels the tube may be holding her back from that which means that she would also like the mickey button if she continues not eat orally. Rob and I are going to not feed Aryssa for a few days.... I know that sounds mean but we want to see if she will get hungry and try to eat. Worth a shot to avoid surgery. This will start on Monday through Wednesday. We got the doctors approval and she told us to make sure we keep her hydrated with pedialyte through the NG tube and not water so she is getting the electrolytes to keep her kidneys functioning. She told us signs to watch out for on dehydration which we shouldn't see because we WILL keep her hydrated. Will post next week and let everyone know how this goes. Everyone pray that maybe she will figure it out.

I posted a minute ago.. but I think that my dial-up lost it for me!!
ReplyDeleteRemember that kids (adults really too) resist change. Aryssa may fight the change in her feeding method! If you can get her to drink a little formula, I bet she will get the idea very quick! Will the doctor let you sweeten the formula?
Don't get discouraged!
Good Luck Sweetie!
